Don Gunther, the owner and of the Transworld Business Advisors Brisbane CBD franchise shares his experiences and how he got started as a business broker.

"I think in this day and age what people want is accurate advice. They want someone to stand by them and they want someone to guide them through the process. I approach business brokering in the way of not so much manipulate a sale but what I try to do is facilitate a buy. I find out very much what the seller wants and very much what the buyer wants. And then the job of matching the two together and finding the right business becomes a lot easier.

When I joined Transworld, one of the first things that happened was they sent me to the U.S. and we had a week of solid training. That training was just second to none. So when I started my business up here in Australia, I found that I was able to get listings much quicker than I thought I'd be able to. Then buyers started coming forward. And it was only a matter of a few months before I had my first offer and my first sale underway. 

There's various levels of support, there's the U.S. that's been doing it for 35 years, there's Australia that built a really good network of support now that we go to, and also my fellow franchisees. It sort of makes you feel like you're a part of something bigger and you've got support there when you need it, but at the same time you're still your own business owner, your own boss. 

I'm passionate about relationships, about getting to understand a business and the different needs of the owners.  Work as a business broker is exactly like that, you meet a variety of different personalities. I'm passionate about sport, love my Rugby League. And like sport, there's a result, the actions that you take determine how successful you are.

Everyday I meet new business owners and they're all totally different, and I love it. I can conduct my business from a coffee shop and from a laptop, or if I want to I can work in an office and have a team of people around me, or I can do a variety of both, but it's fun and it's a challenge and at the same time you're actually helping people. You're helping people to move onto the next stage of their life, whether they be buying a business or whether they be selling a business."
