Celebrity chef, football fanatic, global coffee franchisee – local cyclist Andy’s whirlwind ride
It's been a quantum leap from cooking for Dr Who and cheering on his beloved soccer team Burnley FC at close quarters to establishing the world's biggest mobile coffee franchise in the Kenwick and Maddington territories in faraway WA, but Kelmscott local Andy Lynch says it is the best move he has ever made.
Working as a chef for more than 20 years, Andy Migrated to Perth from England in 1997, but not before cooking for a host of British celebrities. "When working in London, I cooked for a number of TV personalities with Sylvester McCoy, who played Doctor Who, and Todd Carty of East Enders and The Bill probably being the most famous," he said.
"When I arrived here I didn't have chance to get jet lag as I started work within two days of arriving and went straight to work as a Chef in a busy hotel in the Perth CBD."
After a year owning and running a café Andy launched a Kenwick and Maddington territory franchise of the Australian-born Cafe2U, the world's biggest mobile coffee franchise, in mid-August. A key factor behind the move was the unique "Accelerator Package" Cafe2U introduced to ensure new franchisees are taking home $500 a day from the first day of trading. The start-up package fast-tracks their business launch by three months, allowing them to reach a level of daily sales that previously took on average up to this period to achieve. A daily business schedule was constructed with the assistance of his allocated Franchisee Development Manager.
"It has been the best thing I've ever done. At the end of my eighth week and it has been fantastic. I'm getting invited to Christmas parties, and I've retained the great customer base I started with. We generated excellent custom from the start.
"There was a new field manager allocated to help me, we were both there for the launch and both built up the business together. We have maintained the same customer base as we did from the start and I couldn't be happier. I have fun with the people I visit, and I love making them laugh. People look forward to seeing me each day."
Old habits die hard and Andy still avidly follows the "Mighty Clarets" Burnley FC, who were this season promoted to the English Premier League "much to my wife's amazement!" he said in his thick Northern accent.
But he has become a bona fide local and brewed his finest blend at the Pinjarra two day motocross event for juniors and seniors recently, donating 10% of the takings for the weekend back to the organisers so that they can put the money back into the club.
He also completed the Great Escapade WA in March, which charted a total of 567km in nine days. "I met many people on the ride and we were all hanging out for a decent coffee on those hills. I Love cycling, it has helped improved my fitness after a full knee reconstruction in July last year."
Andy can be seen cycling around the Kelmscott hills on the weekend, ready for a coffee at the end.
