Finding the winning recipe for business success

Global Burgers

Jamie Oliver makes owning a restaurant seems so simple - cook good food and treat your customers nicely.

And if you decide to hire experienced staff without the emotional baggage exposed by a reality TV show, running a restaurant should be easier still.

But with statistics suggesting that new restaurants are no more immune from failure than any other business, the dream of owning the hottest eatery in town requires more than a flair with food and a winning smile.

According to franchise development specialist, James Davan, restaurant franchises increase the likelihood of on-going success by more than double.

"The reasons why restaurants fail fall into these categories - wrong location, under-estimating the equipment costs, poorly trained or selected staff and perhaps most importantly, not understanding the profit margin required per menu item," he said.

"One of the benefits of buying a franchise is all of those factors have been worked out for you and have been proven to work.

"Look at it this way, you are more guaranteed of a successful dish if you follow a proven recipe than if you conduct a trial and error cooking experiment."

Theo Vair, franchisee and owner of Global Burgers Surfers Paradise agrees.

"Although it''''s not my first venture into business ownership, Global Burgers Surfers Paradise is my first restaurant and I wasn't going to risk investing in something didn't have a track record," he said.

"The great advantage is if I do have a challenge, I can talk to the guys who set up the very first restaurant."

Instead of restricting the culinary arts, restaurant franchising actually leads to higher quality standards.

"While people might equate a franchised restaurant with a fast food take away, in effect what creating the systems does is ensure a greater control of the quality of the food," said Mark Baylis, Global Burgers Operations Manager.

"Ensuring a high consistent quality is essential to the success of any restaurant."
